Two more Number One-ranked American schoolboy athletes have entered and will be raising the Performance levels to, perhaps, unprecedented heights.   The boys High Jump already is featuring three seven-footers, and now they are joined by David Smith (Georgia), who decided the quality competition and the thinner air of New Mexico was the ideal situation to improve on his already impressive 7'4" seasonal best.  He may also hop into a 400, where he has run under 47.0 on a relay.

Speaking of versatile, however, it would be hard to top the second of these major stars.  Tennessee's Kevin Lazas is not only top-ranked in the Decathalon, but his 7,510 points are No. Three All-Time for American High Schoolers.  Remember, Albuquerque's own Curtis Beach ranks first, is recognized as the Greatest High School Decathlete of All-Time, and holds the GSW record at 7,719.  If Kevin gets a calm day instead of the 40 mph winds that ravaged Beach's quest for 8,000 point a year ago, we could all see a magnificent, new record.

See you at UNM Stadium for the 35th Great Southwest Track and Field Classic.
