Records Broken at 2010 Great Southwest Classic

The 35th edition of the Great Southwest Track & Field Classic came to a close on Saturday with several notable performances.  It all started on Friday, Anicka Newell (New Mexico) became the first Girls Decathlon champion with a score of 5015 points. Then a few hours later Eleanor Fulton (Colorado) broke her own meet record in the Girls 2000M Steeplechase with a time of 6:55.38. First Medals Awarded at 2010 GSW

History was made today in the Great Southwest T&F Classic Combined Events, when Anicka Newell became the first female Decathlon winner. Anicka a Junior at Highland High School in Albuquerque, NM, along with Sydney Haase of Missouri, and Alysa Herchet were all medal winners in the Girls Decathlon.  Anicka competing in her first Combined Event (CE) compiled a score of 5015 points to set the Meet Record, followed by Sydney with 4750 points and Alysa with 2751. The GSW has an recent tradition of being the greatest high school meet in the country for high school Decathalon and Heptathalon.  These difficult disciplines require young athletes to develop skills in a variety of events outside their naturally-gifted zone.  Last year under adverse conditions, Albuquerque Academy's Curtis Beach broke a national record with 7,909 points and, a few weeks later, won the decathalon at the Junior Pan-American Games.  If not for the high winds here in 2009, he might well have approach...
