It all started on Friday, Anicka Newell (New Mexico) became the first Girls Decathlon champion with a score of 5015 points. Then a few hours later Eleanor Fulton (Colorado) broke her own meet record in the Girls 2000M Steeplechase with a time of 6:55.38. On Saturday, records were broken in the Boys Javelin and Boys High Jump. Devin Bogert (Texas) threw the Javelin 67.57m, or 221-08 feet to break the previous mark of 217-05 set in 2005. In the Boys High Jump, David Smith (Georgia), set a new meet record of 2.20m or 7'-2.5" to surpass the long standing previous mark of 7'-2" set in 1995. It should be noted that super sprinter...

Two more Number One-ranked American schoolboy athletes have entered and will be raising the Performance levels to, perhaps, unprecedented heights. The boys High Jump already is featuring three seven-footers, and now they are joined by David Smith (Georgia), who decided the quality competition and the thinner air of New Mexico was the ideal situation to improve on his already impressive 7'4" seasonal best. He may also hop into a 400, where he has run under 47.0 on a relay. Speaking of versatile, however, it would be hard to top the second of these major stars. Tennessee's Kevin Lazas is not only top-ranked in the Decathalon, but his 7,510 points are No. Three All-Time for American High Schoolers. Remember, Albuquerque's own Curtis...

The GSW has an recent tradition of being the greatest high school meet in the country for high school Decathalon and Heptathalon. These difficult disciplines require young athletes to develop skills in a variety of events outside their naturally-gifted zone. Last year under adverse conditions, Albuquerque Academy's Curtis Beach broke a national record with 7,909 points and, a few weeks later, won the decathalon at the Junior Pan-American Games. If not for the high winds here in 2009, he might well have approached 8,000 points. The exceptional Ryann Krais of Eagle Valley (PA) almost tagged the girls national hep record in 2008 when she won almost every event on her way to 5,522 points. This year's fields have no one with...

The Sprints and Hurdles Coming across the nation to cement her estimable credentials is Octavious Freeman (Lake Wales, FL), whose 11.30 100 is second-fastest in the US and, hold onto your hats, that time was actually run INTO an adverse wind. For all intents and purposes, she is the premier schoolgirl sprinter in America, and not even Texas' swift Jennifer Madu is likely to catch her, at least in the Elite century. Jennifer is also a contender in the 200, but Jessica Davis(Highland, CA) the season's best time of 23.42, not far off the meet mark. Speaking of meet records, one of the ladies' oldest, Eureka Hall's (Safford, AZ) 52.99 400 from 1992, may finally go. Diamond Dixon (Westside, TX) is just that, a brilliant gem,...
